My Bookmarks
This page holds links to some of the better pages I’ve come across. It’s easy to capture links (Pocket, OneNote, Evernote, etc.) The problem is finding the good links when you want them. If I put them on my website, I know where they are, and maybe it will help others.
A Note On Free Books
I’m not the biggest fan of PDF books. I find paper copies to be superior in every way except portability. However, not everyone has accesss to a research library, and not everyone has a high salary, so the need to buy books leads to a massive gap in opportunities. There are also some books with ridiculous price tags (in some cases, more than $200) and you’d have to be (a) desperate or (b) an idiot to pay that much for a book.
Economics
Older macro notes by Per Krusell
Older macro notes by Doepke, Lehnert and Sellgren
Macro textbook by Garin, Lester, and Sims
Statistics
The classic book Bayesian Data Analysis is now online. The book itself isn’t that expensive (around $50 hardcover the last I checked), but not everyone has access to a research library or a high salary. What I like about that link is the videos, notes, and examples.
Hadley Wickham makes some of his books available online. To be honest, I tend to stick to base R for the most part, but he’s added tons of functionality to R that many others have found useful. A more introductory book is R for Data Science. If you’re serious about learning the R programming language, you’ll want to work through his Advanced R book.
An Introduction to Statistical Learning and The Elements of Statistical Learning.
Course notes on optimization for machine learning and Mathematical Foundations of Data Sciences.
Notes
- Tiago Forte is probably the best resource on notetaking right now. His Building a Second Brain course is expensive, but he’s made some high quality content available for free:
- The writer’s ultimate guide to Notion You can now get the professional plan for Notion free if you’re an academic. That’s a heck of an offer if you don’t currently have a tool for your notes. One of the features you get with Notion that you don’t get with Evernote is equation support.
- Free tools for note taking (not comprehensive and I haven’t worked much with some of these)
- Online notes apps: Evernote, Notion, OneNote, Dropbox Paper.
- Other apps: Joplin, QOwnNotes, Notable.
- Text editors: Emacs, Vim. Related: Seven habits of effective text editing, org mode manual, Textadept.
